Dr. Suess Week in Decatur

— Northside Elementary School Students kicked off their annual Dr. Suess Week celebration at Monday’s school assembly.

The students started by singing “Happy Birthday” to Dr. Suess, before Daisy-Head Mayzie, otherwise known as speech specialist Andrea Yates, read a poem from the book “Daisy-Head Mayzie” while in full costume.

Middle school gifted and talented students read and acted out the book “Marvin K. Mooney, Will You Please Go Now.”

Dr. Suess Week provides a fun way to promote literacy, according to literacy specialist Jean Duncan.

Activities will continue throughout the week. On Tuesday, students will eat cupcakes to celebrate Dr. Suess’ birthday - Theodore (“Ted”) Seuss Geisel was born on March 2, 1904, in Springfield, Mass., according to www.suessville.com.

Students will have special guest readers during their lunch hour, including some high school athletes, and books will be passed around the classrooms during they day. When a book arrives in a classroom, studentsand teachers will have to drop what they’re doing, put on their Dr. Suess hats and read, Duncan said.

Students will be taking surveys of their favorite Dr. Suess books andcomparing the Northside Elementary School’s results with national surveys. They will also have theme dress-up days, starting with silly-socksand-hair day on Tuesday, Duncan said.

Students will continue to focus on literacy all month. For each book the students read they will get to add a paper link to the reading chain to see how long it grows, Duncan said.
