Retirement Party

A retirement party for Gentry Primary School teacher Sandra Long will be held at 3:30 p.m., May 24, at the Gentry Primary School. Long taught school in Gentry for 32 years, and former students and community members are invited to attend. For more information, call 736-2380.

School Choice applications

The Gentry Public School District will receive Public School Choice applications until June 30. An information sheet and an application may be downloaded at www.gentrypioneers.com or picked up in person at the superintendent’s office during office hours.

Fairmount Cemetery meeting

The annual Fairmount Cemetery potluck luncheon, with a business meeting to follow, will begin at 12:30 p.m., Sunday, May 30, at the Fairmount Community Building, across the road from the cemetery. Donations are welcome. The Fairmount Cemetery Association will celebrate the 150th anniversary of the cemetery in 2012 and a memorial publication is planned. The association invites everyone to bring stories of families and individuals buried in the cemetery for this publication. They can be given to Theresa Alcorn or any officer of the cemetery association.

Highfill Cemetery Memorial

The Highfill Cemetery Memorial observance will be held at 11 a.m., Sunday, May 30, at the Highfill Community Building. A pot-luck lunch will follow.

Grief support group

A grief support group meets in the fellowship hall at the Victory Missionary Baptist Church, 1120 East Main Street in Gentry, at 7 p.m. on the first and third Thursdays of each month. The group is facilitated by Pastor Larry Hendren, who was trained in grief counseling through the clinical pastoral education program at Northwest Medical Center in Springdale.

Driver safety program

A driver safety program sponsored by AARP, will begin from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursday, June 17, at the Total Life Community Center, south of Gentry on Arkansas Highway 59. The classes are designed to assist those over 55 in becoming better drivers by providing useful safety tips to compensate for age-related changes. A $14 fee to cover the cost of materials is required. AARP members who provide their membership number qualify for a $2 discount. Completion of the course may qualify drivers for an auto insurance discount. For more information, call Dick Conrey at 524-5029 or Eddie Greenhaw of Farmers Insurance at 736-8707.

Junior parent night

Gentry High School will have a junior parent night at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 25, in the high school library. Miss Gentry Pageants

The annual Miss Gentry and Little Miss and Mister Gentry pageants will be held during the Freedom Festival celebration in the park on Saturday, July 3rd. Michelle Finnell will be the director of the pageants. Finnell can be reached at 957-4594. Applications are now available on the Gentry School District Web page, at the Gentry city office, Arvest Bank, Gentry Bank, Liberty Bank or in the high school office. The deadline for entries is June 30th. Gentry girls who will be a senior next year are invited to compete for the Miss Gentry title. The winner will receive $200, as well as a crown and sash. She will also represent Gentry at the annual Decatur Barbecue and the Miss Benton County Fair. Little Miss and Mister Gentry must live in the Gentry school district and be between the ages of 3 and 5 on July 3rd.

Miss Colcord Pageant

The Miss Colcord Pageant is set for May 29. The pageant is open to contestants from all surrounding areas. Pageant categories include kindergarten through grade 12. For more information, call 918-314-9613 or send an e-mail to colcordchamber @ yahoo.com.
