Gentry teams triumph

— Though the Lady Pioneers got off to a slow start Nov. 13 against the visiting Lady Elks, they played a strong second half, tied things up by the end of the third quarter and outplayed their opponents in the fourth to win 56-49.

At the end of the first quarter, it looked like Elkins might build on its 12-8 lead and pull away, but Gentry played hard and outscored the Lady Elks by one in the second round, narrowing the Lady Pioneers’ deficit to three points.

After the half, the Lady Pioneers scored 10 in the third to the Lady Elks’ seven, tying the game at 33. The Gentry girls put it away in the final period, outscoring Elkins 23-16.

Tara Arnold led the Lady Pioneers in goals, picking up 23 point in the game. Destiny Thomas and Karoline Page each added nine to the scoreboard. Shelby Hammond added six, and Heather Marshall another five.

Hammond led in rebounds, with eight defensive grabs. Marshall pulled in the ball six times, five of those under Elkins ‘ goal. Page led the team in steals, grabbing the ball away from the Lady Elks four times.

The Pioneers also picked up a win against the visiting Elks on Nov. 13, with a game spread of 57-51.

Marcus Page, Brent Barker and Dusty Haag each had 11 points in the game. Ryan Hockenberry added nine, and Robbie Massie, 8.

Scores for Gentry’s Monday night games against Greenwood were not yet received at press time.
