Mayor Barber calls special meeting to resign council post

— After taking his oath of office administered by Benton County Justice of the Peace Curtis Curry on Nov. 15 in Sulphur Springs City Hall, newly appointed Mayor Greg Barber announced his fi rst special council meeting on Nov. 20 to resign his previous position as the Ward 1, Position 1, council member.

The fi ve-member Council took unanimous action to allow Barber’s resignation. This action opened the way to any qualifi ed Sulphur Springs resident to apply for the vacant Ward 1, Position 1, council seat.

To qualify, a resident must live in the southeast quadrant of Sulphur’s city limit, dwell east of Black Avenue and south of Spring Street.

All qualifi ed residents must present a cover letter with a copy of their current resume to Sulphur’s city clerk in city hall by Dec. 6. The cover letter should affirm the applicant’s desire to become the next Ward 1, Position 1, alderman. Each applicant must then present himself or herself before the council at its Thursday, Dec. 12, regular council session.

At the Dec. 12 session, applicants should be prepared to state aloud their case before the council, as to why the council should appoint them to fulfill Barber’s term until the Nov. 2014 election, Barber said. The Council will then vote their pick of qualified applicants for the seat. Mayor Barber said he plans to swear in the new council member that same evening.

The town’s police chief, Duke Brackney, said he must complete a background check on all city government applicants.Applicants must be a U.S. citizen, a registered voter in the city and not have a felony record on fi le to qualify.
