Hornets sting bulldogs, hold dogs back

The Decatur Bulldogs faced a tough opponent on Friday night, when they played the Hackett Hornets at Bulldog Stadium. Decatur fought hard the entire night but were overwhelmed by the strong offense and defense of Hackett, losing 34 to 7.

Mario Urquidi, who was injured with a deep bruise to his lower leg during the Mountainburg game on Sept. 20, did not dress out for this game. He is expected to play in the Johnson County Westside game on Oct. 4.

Hackett struck fi rst early in the first quarter with a long run from deep inside Decatur territory. They scored again in the second quarter and took a 14 to 0 lead into half time.

Decatur quarterback Meng Vang, on a quarterback sneak, ran the ball into the end zone midway through the second quarter. A penalty against the Bulldogs called the play back, denying Decatur the touchdown.

The Hornets came out in the second half to score two times in the third quarter. A missed fi eld goal by the Hornets made the score 34 to 0 halfway through the third.

Lightning struck for the Bulldogs just before the end of the third quarter when wide receiver Terry Kull ran back a punt return of 58 yards for the only Decatur score. Kicker Tony Mendoz’s point after made it a 34 to 7 Hackett game. Neither team scored in the fourth quarter.

The Bulldogs gave their all during the game. Most of the players stayed on the field throughout the game. This is the problem they face when there are only 22 members on the team and two of the team leaders are sidelined with injuries. With the possibility of Mario Urquidi back to full strength for the next contest, Decatur has a very good chance of winning.

Next game for the Decatur Bulldogs will be at Johnson County Westside on Oct. 4, at 7 p.m.
