Lady Pioneers split high-scoring games

GENTRY -- After shutting out the Lady Eagles at Huntsville on April 8, the Lady Pioneers lost in a high-scoring game at home on Thursday to the Lady Bobcats.

Kyleigh Wheaton, Gentry's freshman pitcher, threw a shutout to lead her teammates past Huntsville, 12-0, in five innings on April 8. Wheaton allowed just one hit in the game and struck out eight Huntsville batters. She walked one.

The Lady Pioneers scored two runs in the first inning on a Huntsville error and added two each in the second and third innings.

The girls scored six more runs in the fourth inning when Taylor Norman singled, Allee Sweeten hit a home run and Wheaton hit a double.

Harley Stanfield, Liberty Brannon, Sweeten, Meledy Owens, Norman, Cariss Goessens and Wheaton each had a hit in the game. Wheaton and Sweeten each had two RBIs. Cariss Goessens hit a triple and brought in one.

Berryville 13

Things didn't go as well when the Lady Pioneers hosted the Lady Bobcats of Berryville on Thursday, with the Lady Bobcats taking the lead early and winning, 13-9.

Berryville held Gentry scoreless until the fifth inning when Gentry scored five runs. The girls added another four in the sixth but couldn't catch up to the Berryville girls who had scored 10 runs before the Gentry girls got their first runner across home plate.

Gentry had 10 hits in the game and 11 errors. Berryville had 11 hits and four errors.

Wheaton pitched five innings for Gentry, allowing 10 runs on eight hits, striking out seven and walking none. Raegan Jude threw two innings.

Lady Pioneers Mandy Barber, Taylor Norman and Harley Stanfield each had multiple hits for Gentry. Stanfield, Norman and Barber had two apiece. Jude, Wheaton and Cariss Goessens each had two RBIs.
