HIGHFILL -- Prom night for high school students across the country is a magical time, a time to dress up in fancy tuxedos and long elegant dresses and dance the night away under the stars. For the three upper classes at Decatur High School, dancing the night away became a reality April 12 in a beautiful country setting.

The group traveled to Highfill to the main hall at Holland Farms for their night under the stars. Seniors, juniors and sophomores began filtering into the hall about 6:30 p.m. The beautiful buildings, hillside landscapes and farm implements on the Holland Farm complex afford the kids the chance to take hundreds of picturesque photos of the night to someday show their children and grandchildren.

At around 8 p.m. the prom began to hop. Led by Desi Meek, Kaylee Morales, Cayden Bingham and a host of others, the kids took to the dance floor for two hours of nonstop rocking and rolling. Of course, it would not be a Decatur prom without at least one line dance. Everybody joined in, students, teachers, coaches and administrators alike.

While all the boys looked spiffy in their fancy tuxes, bow ties and boutonnieres, Bingham stood out with his white tux, dark shirt and turquoise patterned tie. Sporting John Travolta's Saturday Night Fever look from the 1970s, he was by far the snazziest dresser of the night.

At 9:30 p.m, after all the votes were tallied, the 2019 prom king and queen were finally announced. The honors went to Austin Hamilton and Presley Smith. After the royal coronation, the couple took to the center of the dance floor for the royal dance of the prom.

Just before the evening ended, a ceremonial crown was given to Ladale Clayton in memory of Haley Shaffer who died the day before the prom from injuries she received in an accident earlier in the week. A moment of silence was observed to remember the Decatur High School sophomore and then they danced one final dance before the prom ended.
