Lady Pioneers add three to win column

GENTRY -- The Lady Pioneers picked up three wins on the basketball court last week, defeating Future School of Ft. Smith on Friday, West Fork on Dec. 3 and Cedarville on Dec. 2.

Following coronation ceremonies on Friday, the Gentry girls played some solid basketball and defeated the Future School of Ft. Smith, 75-52.

The Lady Pioneers took a 9-point lead in the opening quarter, 19-10, and were up 40-22 at the halftime break. By the end of the third quarter, it was Gentry 59 and FSFS 35.

Though the FSFS girls scored 17 points in the final quarter, The Lady Pioneers added 16 points for the 75-52 win.

Ariel Nix led Gentry in scoring with 22. Meledy Owens had 17, and Emily Toland 16.

West Fork 41

A strong third quarter sealed the deal for the Lady Pioneers when they hosted the Lady Tigers of West Fork on Jan. 3. Gentry scored 14 points and held the West Fork girls to three to jump out in front and take the nonconference win, 52-41.

Gentry outscored West Fork, 15-10, in the opening quarter but was only up 26-24 at the half. With a 40-27 lead after three, West Fork's 14 points in the final quarter only closed the gap by two, giving Gentry the win.

Ariel Nix again led in scoring with 21. Ahrya Reding had nine and Jaiden Wilmoth eight in the game. Meledy Owens hit two three-pointers.

Cedarville 34

The Lady Pioneers came from behind in Dec. 2 play at Cedarville to secure a 38-34 nonconference win.

Gentry was down, 10-4, in the opening quarter and 19-14 at the half, but the Gentry girls closed the gap to 24-23 after three and pulled ahead by scoring 15 points in the final quarter to win by four.
