GENTRY -- The pond in the Flint Creek Nature Park was a popular place on Saturday morning when the Gentry Chamber of Commerce held its annual fishing derby.

Thirty-seven children participated in the tournament, in addition to adults enjoying the free fishing weekend in Arkansas, according to Janie Parks, the executive director of the Gentry Chamber of Commerce. Though the pond was recently stocked, fishing was kind of slow, possibly because of all the recent rains and algae bloom in the pond.

But one young fisherman, Lacey Cheek, 7, of Gentry, using crickets as bait, was reeling in the fish. She won the derby with six fish.

In addition to prizes for the derby winner, participating children were given prizes provided by local area businesses.
