Smith-Gomez, playing the oboe, earned a spot on the Region 6 All-Region First Junior High Band and performed in a concert Jan. 20. The band was conducted by Marry Ann French. It performed "Mad Dash" by Timothy Loest, "Northern Lights" by Alan Lee Silva, "Groovee" by Richard Saucedo, and "Critical Mass" by Todd Statler. Smith-Gomez is a freshman at Decatur High School.

Demian Merworth earned a position in the tuba section of the Second Senior High Band. He also performed on Jan. 20, later in the day. That band was conducted by Julius Stevens. It performed "Ignition" by Todd Statler, "Rhosymedre" by Walter Beeler, and "Flashing Winds" by Jan Van der Roost.

Before the Feb. 21 board meeting, both Smith-Gomez and Merworth each received the Bulldog Pride Award, presented by Steve Watkins, school superintendent, for their achievements.
