DECATUR -- "This project started with Larry Ben several years ago when I was still principal at Northside," said Jeff Gravette, former Decatur Superintendent. "I took over the project when he left and I was able to move it forward to what we see before us."

Members of the Decatur School Board, Chamber of Commerce and community leaders gathered in front of Decatur Middle School May 8 to formally dedicate the newest gym in the Decatur School System.

Gravette spearheaded the project for the last two years, finding ways to finance the project, interviewing building contractors and overseeing the construction of the gym project.

The project was a little over halfway complete when Steve Watkins took over the Decatur superintendent's position after Gravette took over as the assistant superintendent of the Gravette School District.

After Watkins concluded his speech, Kim Wilkins and Sandy Duncan, Decatur Chamber officers, cut the ceremonial red ribbon formally opening the new gym.

The Decatur Middle School gym is the second building project completed for the Decatur School District. In 2015, the Northside Elementary safe room/gym was also dedicated.
