FAYETTEVILLE --The Decatur Bulldogs opened their 2020-21 basketball season with a pair of road games, the first in Fayetteville Nov. 9 and the second in Rogers Nov. 10. It would be the first chance for Bulldog fans to see their favorite team under new head coach Dayton Shaw. Unfortunately for the fans and Shaw, the Decatur Bulldogs, playing a pair of much more powerful teams, found themselves on the losing end of both contests.
The Nov. 9 contest pitted Decatur against the New School Cougars in Fayetteville. This would be the first basketball game as a head coach for Shaw.
The Cougars were the first to score on a field goal for the first lead of the contest early in the first quarter. Late in the quarter, the Bulldogs finally got on the scoreboard with a three-point shot from the right wing by Kevin Garcia. This would be the only points of the quarter for Decatur, as the Cougars extended their lead by 15.
The New School went on a 22 to 10 scoring run that ended the first half with the Cougars leading the Bulldogs by 27.
The second half was all New School and the Cougars claimed the victory, 68-32.
Two Bulldogs were in double figures for the contest. They included Edger Herrera with 11, followed by Kevin Garcia with 10. Adding to the scoring drive were Bryson Funk, Deegan Brooks and Ben Watkins with three and Enrique Rubi with two.
In the second contest of the week, on Nov. 10, it was much the same as the Bulldogs took on the Ozark Catholic Academy Griffins in Rogers. A 30 to 7 run in the fourth quarter gave the Griffins the 63-23 victory over the Bulldogs.
Leading the way for Decatur in the Ozark Catholic contest was Trevor Girner with six, followed by Roger Hernandez and Bryson Funk each with four, Konner Hunt and Carlos Hernandez each with three, Kevin Garcia, Edger Herrera, Enrique Rubi, Andres Revolorio and Ben Watkins each with two.
