DECATUR -- How can you occupy the kids now that school is out for the summer? Send them to camp.
One local athletic department found a way to offer a place for kids to go and stay in shape while gaining valuable experience in the sports in which they plan to participate in the upcoming sports seasons that start in late August -- football, volleyball and cross country.
Shane Holland, head track and field coach at Decatur High School, assembled his Bulldog colleagues together in late May to find the best way to help the Decatur athletes keep in shape while still having a little summer fun. Holland, along with Dayton Shaw, Cali Lankford, Tajhe Turner, JC Dorsey and athletic director Jacque Smith, worked out a schedule for the new Bulldog Summer Sports Program which began June 7.
The program runs from 8 a.m. to noon Monday through Thursday at Peterson Gym and Bulldog Stadium. The program includes weight-room training, warm-up exercises, running and a little practice time.
In all, about 35 junior and senior high students took advantage of the summer program, which will last through the end of June.
