Golf Classic raises $7,000 for Gravette schools

GRAVETTE -- The John Edwards Gravette Golf Classic was held April 24 at the Highlands Golf Course. There were 120 golfers who participated and raised approximately $7,000 for Gravette schools' fine arts and athletic programs. This was the 18th annual Gravette Golf Classic and the first to honor John Edwards.

John Edwards instituted the Gravette Golf Classic in 2002 and by 2015 it had raised more than $120,000 for various school programs. The classic was his pet project and he worked tirelessly to publicize it, recruit golfers and make it a success in every way. In other service to the school he was a longtime school board member and served as board president at least three times, developed a fund for students in need, volunteered to read to students at the elementary school, served at the annual PTO fall festival and helped to create a handicap-accessible garden area for the middle school special education students.

Edwards had a tremendous impact on the Gravette School District and it is very fitting that the annual golf classic be named in his honor.
