Pioneers win opening basketball games

GENTRY -- The Pioneers started off their basketball season with a win over Life Way at home on Nov. 16.

The Pioneers got off to a slow start in the opening round of play, finishing the first quarter down, 13-8. Hayden Henry hit a three-pointer, Garrison Jackson sunk a deuce and a free throw and Brayden Feathers added a two-pointer.

The Pioneers pulled ahead by the half, going to the locker room with a two-point lead, 20-18. Bart Walker hit a pair of two-pointers, Feathers and Riggs Harper each put in treys and Hayzen Phillips added a deuce.

Addi Taylor contributed in a big way in the third quarter, hitting three baskets from outside the three-point line. Walker added three two-pointers, Harper and Jackson one each, and Henry another trey for Gentry's 22 points in the quarter, making it a 42-25 game going into the final quarter of play.

The Pioneers added 10 points in the final quarter to Life Way's seven for the 52-32 win. Jonathon Corter hit a pair of deuces and Walker, Harper and Gauge Thompson had one each.

Walker led the Pioneers in scoring with 12, Taylor followed with nine. Harper had seven.

At West Fork on Friday, the Pioneers won their second game, defeating the Tigers 67-58.
