Smoke testing of sewers to begin soon in Gentry

GENTRY -- On behalf of the city of Gentry, TREKK Design Group LLC will begin testing the sanitary sewers in the first part of August. This includes a process called "smoke testing," and residents are encouraged to learn about the process.

Smoke testing helps find and locate defects or improper connections by blowing an odorless and nontoxic smoke into the sewer. When there are no defects or improper connections, smoke will only be seen from the roof vents of each building that is connected to the sewer. When there are direct improper connections, smoke will be seen where there are defects.

Since it can be unnerving to see smoke when it is not expected -- 48 hours before testing begins -- door hangers will be placed on or given to the owners of buildings and homes that will be in the test area. Local police and fire officials will also be notified so that they are prepared if citizens who have forgotten about testing happen to become alarmed.

For further information about sewer testing, residents are encouraged to watch a video about smoke testing at bit.ly/SmokeTesting.
