Gentry loses last bowling match before holiday break

January 11, 2022 at 7:45 a.m.

GENTRY -- The Pioneer bowlers played their last game before Christmas break on Dec. 16. They played Rogers Heritage at Hillside Lanes.

It was a tough match for both teams, and they regrettably did not win either of the matches. The bowlers struggled with splits, which is when the ball goes through two pins separated by at least a pin's width.

Coach Kelli Mathews said, "Both teams had some bright spots but, in the end, were not able to pull the wins off."

The girls' bowler of the day was freshman Evey Tomlinson with a 155 and 168. Some other girls with high games were junior Brooke Lawrence, 132; and senior Emily Jessen, 125. The final score for their game was 1,938-1,651, Heritage.

"Our team did not do very well, but we picked it up in the end. State and conference are coming up very quickly," explained junior Danielle Huff.

The male high bowler was eleventh grader Robert Baker, with a high game of 167. Junior Crafton Beeler had a 167, and sophomore Elijah Carter had a 155. The final score was 2,135-1,904, Heritage.

Coach Mathews said, "The boys all had a rough day. They were rolling the ball well but just couldn't get any breaks. Splits were abundant for them all day."

Although they had a bad match, the team still kept high spirits.

"Our teams are coming together and they are all supporting each other and having fun. I was proud of their attitudes yesterday; they all still supported each other and had fun," quoted Coach Mathews.

The bowlers have been working extremely hard on their abilities.

"This team grows each day in confidence and skill. I have so many that come and practice on their own time. I always hope that, after it is all said and done, they end up with a love for the sport. Bowling is something that they can enjoy the rest of their lives," she continued.

The team's match on Tuesday, Jan. 4, against FHS was canceled; however, there was a match on Thursday, Jan. 6.

Coach Mathews said, "The kids are all taking pledges for the annual bowl-a-thon, so if you would like to support your favorite Pioneer bowler ask them how to sign up."
