DECATUR -- In his final state track meet before his retirement, Shane Holland took a small group of track athletes to the 2A State Track Meet at Quitman High School on May 3. This year's effort yielded only one medal winner, Brian Ruiz.
Both Decatur teams had an exceptional season thanks to Holland and his assistant coach, Tahje Turner.
A total of 28 girls' and 36 boys' teams gathered on the track at Quitman for a grueling day of preliminaries and final running and field events, 36 in all (18 each).
By mid-evening, both boys' and girls' state champions were crowned. On the boys' side, it was host Quitman that stole the show, amassing a total of 107 points.
