Bulldogs face stiff competition at 2A state track meet

DECATUR -- In his final state track meet before his retirement, Shane Holland took a small group of track athletes to the 2A State Track Meet at Quitman High School on May 3. This year's effort yielded only one medal winner, Brian Ruiz.

Both Decatur teams had an exceptional season thanks to Holland and his assistant coach, Tahje Turner.

A total of 28 girls' and 36 boys' teams gathered on the track at Quitman for a grueling day of preliminaries and final running and field events, 36 in all (18 each).

By mid-evening, both boys' and girls' state champions were crowned. On the boys' side, it was host Quitman that stole the show, amassing a total of 107 points. Teams in the Bulldogs' 2A West conference did quite well with Yellville-Summit taking second with 60 points. Decatur finished in 17th place with 15, while Alpena finished 25th with eight points, and Haas Hall Bentonville finished 29th with five points.

On the girls' side, it was 2A West district champion Yellville-Summit that earned the 2A State Championship with a total of 103.5 points. Flippin finished in 18th place with seven, Decatur finished in 19th with six, and Alpena finished in 28th with one point.
