Lady Lions win big in opening game of state tournament, fall in extra inning of round two

GRAVETTE -- After shutting out the Hamburg Lady Lions on Thursday, 12-0, the Gravette Lady Lions fell to the Stuttgart Lady Ricebirds on Friday, 1-0, in the second round of state tournament play at Nashville.

Gravette had three hits in Friday's game -- by Keeley Elsea, Brynn Romine and Meghan Woodmancy -- but was held scoreless by the tough defensive play of Stuttgart for eight innings.

Stuttgart scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the eighth when the Stuttgart runner placed on second in the extra inning scored on a sacrifice fly to right field.

Brooke Handle was in the circle for the game. She allowed five hits, struck out seven and walked one. Stuttgart's pitcher struck out 16 Gravette batters and walked five.

Hamburg 0

Against Hamburg on Thursday, the Gravette girls scored seven runs in the first, one in the second, and two each in the third and fourth to win the game, 12-0, in four and a half innings. Gravette had eight hits in four at-bats. Hamburg was charged with seven errors.

Meghan Woodmancy led her teammates with her bat with two hits and an RBI. She scored twice.

Brooke Handle pitched four innings, striking out five batters and walking one. She allowed one hit in the game. Sydney Kildow pitched one inning and struck out one Hamburg batter, allowing no hits.

Gravette finished the season with 22 wins and eight losses.
