BELLA VISTA -- Led by freshman Teagen Muldoon's medalist-winning score of 82, the Gravette Lion girls golf team qualified for the 4A state tournament in play held on Sept. 20 at the Highlands Golf Course.
The Gravette team, consisting of Muldoon, Rachel Deihl, Karley Auffet and Brooke Handle, carded a score of 297 to finish 47 strokes ahead of third place Huntsville in the 4A-1 district tournament. The Shiloh Christian team took first place on the girls side with a score of 279.
Also qualifying for state from the boys side was Gravette's Isaiah Larson, who shot an 84 on the par-72 course to finish third overall and first among the individual qualifiers. The Gravette boys team finished fourth in the team competition with a score of 292.
The top 4A-1 boys teams were Shiloh Christian with a score of 254 and Berryville which carded a 267. In 4A high school golf, teams consist of up to four players with the best three scorecards tallied for the overall team score.
For the Muldoon family, bringing home district medalist honors is becoming commonplace. Teagen's older brother Braxton won medalist honors last year on the boys side for Gravette.
Other scores for the Lion girls were Deihl with a 93, which was good enough for third place overall, Auffet with 122, and Handle with 125. The district performance placed the Gravette team in the state tournament to be held Monday after press time at the Magellan Golf Course in Hot Springs Village.
Larson's teammate scores for the boys were Aiden Lewallen with a 102, Brendan Gebhart with a 106, and McCoy Kildow with 107.
The 4A boys state tournament will be held on Oct. 3, also at the Magellan course.
Twelve boys in total qualified for state. The four players each from the Shiloh and Berryville teams and also Larson, JJ Beck of Pea Ridge, Tate Beniot of Prairie Grove, and Coleman Henry of Huntsville who edged out Pea Ridge's Brady Spivey for that last spot in a tiebreaker. Medalist honors for the boys went to Brant Fowler of Shiloh Christian, who shot a 77 for the low round of the day at Highlands.
The average score for the 28 competitors on the boys side was 99.61 on the tight Highlands course.
On the girls side, 11 qualified, with the four team members each from Shiloh and Gravette, in addition to individuals Emma Hall of Berryville, Lynden Osborn of Pea Ridge and Makayla Collyar of Farmington.
The average round for the girls Tuesday was 113.61 for the 23 competitors that carded scores.
Seven schools competed in this year's 4A-1 district tournament. Gentry is in the district but did not field golf teams this year due to a lack of serious interest on the part of students.
