What is this country comin’ to?

Did you roast any wieners or eat that fish you have been catching on Labor Day?

We had a grand time, Grands were here in full force. You sorta forget how much you enjoyed having the babies underfoot until a nice calm holiday rolls around and all of the babies are almost as tall or taller than you! They still eat homemade ice cream and pie like it was gonna be all gone tomorrow and, because it might be, they eat dessert fi rst!

I really do enjoy the Grands and am very proud of them as a unit and individually. They have not besmirched our name or carved their initials in the county jailhouse wall. Not a one of them have earrings or wear their pants down around their knees. Not the males or the females, and they all sport smiles. They can and do quote me, their folks and their scriptures. Of course, my wise sayings are important, and I suspect they treasure them! (Harrumph)

My close relative is the center of our family, beingthe true harmony and inspiration of this clan. She supervises, devises, organizes and categorizes each and all activities. She sorta sparkles and glows in the respect and love that puddles up around her during these family do’s. I heard her lamenting about the lack of babies to the female relative and receiving the evil eye for that remark! We all do enjoy this time we spend on replenishing and relaxing. I fear we may replenish a little over the full line, but that pie was pretty fi ttin’!

We halted the work on the new covered area for the holiday, but we are hard at it and about to get it finished. I am sure it will be welcomed in rain, shine, sleet or snow! We have a couple of fans intended for each crowd pen and for the chute area and lights and then some more lights! Sure gonna be dandy. I had to live all these years to get this and I intend to work cattle maybe twice a week until I get tired of it!

I had to buy licenses to build on my own place. Can you imagine what that points to in this country?I was not happy about it, not the cost but the idea of the whole mess. What are we to do now that so many folks are arriving by the boat load to set up housekeeping in our areas? These new arrivals are not of the agricultural ilk; they think all calves are cute and need names, chickens are sweet and yet when they smell the cute and sweet little animals they are aghast and want to rid the stench from their air. They also want to make all the little farms look like tinker toy farms, neat and to their satisfaction. I tell you I was right put out by the new laws we must deal with.

It is my opinion, and everyone has one, an opinion is a necessity and a good many men and women have given their lives so we could have the freedom to express ours. Register to vote, go vote and, for goodness sakes, if you need a ride, call my close relative. She has a car and will travel! I welcome new blood in the country, but we have a duty to keep our laws in line with our ways.

I don’t want to suggest anything about the educated and growing number of Northern settlers, but I know some in higher places do not want to pay any more cattle guards! Get a grip!
