GRAVETTE -- Four members of the Gravette Lions Club attended the 98th Arkansas Lions State Convention on the campus of the University of the Ozarks in Clarksville. The meeting, on Saturday, April 30, was held in the Rogers Conference Center. Gravette Lions attending the state meeting were Bill Mattler, zone chairperson, of Hiwasse; Jeff Davis and Susan Holland, president and vice-president of the Gravette Lions Club; and member Melissa Williams.

A memorial service was held for Lion members who had died in the past year. Other features of the program included a motivational speech by Paul Mellor, author of "Memory! How to Remember Anything" and "You're Almost There," and the keynote speech by Brian Sheehan, past international director of Lions Clubs. Several speakers updated those present on current Lions Club state projects, including Mid-South Lions, the Eye Bank and Lab and the Lions Club International Foundation. Cake, ice cream and punch were served in a pre-centennial celebration to kick off the 100th anniversary of Lions Clubs International in 2017.

The regular meeting of the local club was held Tuesday, May 3. A report was given on the recycling program held Tuesday, April 19. Several upcoming events were discussed, including a planned workday at Hillcrest Cemetery Saturday, May 14; a visit from Myrna McGee, second vice district governor, on Tuesday, May 17; and a program by Channel 5 news anchor Daren Bobb at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 4. Bobb will be speaking on Northwest Arkansas and the changes here in the last 30 years.

Election of new officers was held. Officers elected for the coming year are Jeff Davis, president; Susan Holland, vice-president; Bill Mattler, secretary; Tina Crose, treasurer; and Ken Foxx, tail twister. The 2016-2017 officers will begin their terms July 1.

The May-June issue of the Gravette Pride, the Lions Club newsletter, reported that 169 pairs of eyeglasses had recently been sent to the Lions Club International eyeglass recycling center in Texas. There they will be cleaned, sorted, labeled and packaged for reuse in developing countries.
