— DECATUR -- A vital part of any sports program is the fans. Helping to keep the fans is a group of young people coming together as one to bring the fans into the game.

The Decatur cheerleaders have a new sponsor this season. Ladale Clayton, who serves as Decatur Chamber of Commerce vice-president and Decatur alderwomen, took over the program from Chelsea Robertson, who left the program to devote more time to her family.

The cheerleaders have appeared at both the Berryville away football game Sept. 2 and at the first regular home game against Gentry Sept. 9. Their routines sparked Bulldog pride in all Decatur fans who attended both games.

When not spreading cheer, the team is working the concession stand at all the home volleyball matches, helping the Decatur Booster Club for its special projects.

Like any other organization, it takes a lot of funding to keep it going and the cheer team is no exception.

The Decatur Cheerleaders will host their own fundraising luncheon Sept. 23 from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Grand Savings Bank location in Decatur. The team will serve barbecue pulled chicken sandwiches with chips and drink, all for $5 a plate.

All proceeds go toward the purchase of new gear and other expenses that the cheerleading squad may incur throughout the school year.
