No news is no news in Black Bear Hollow

BLACK BEAR HOLLOW -- It was business as usual during Tuesday night's school board meeting in Black Bear Hollow, northeast of Gravette. The only problem was there was no real business, as usual.

After a reading of last month's minutes and hearing and approving the financial reports for the district and one-room school house, the three-member board moved into executive session to handle personal matters. The superintendent was asked to join the board so they could have an even number and play a two-team game of Pitch while they talked over personal matters. Cecil O'Neal, the board chairman, was seen removing a deck of cards from his coat pocket as the board room was cleared.

The board returned to open session two hours and 49 minutes later. By a show of hands, the board unanimously approved a new contract for Ed Booker the superintendent/teacher in the Black Bear Hollow School District.

Clyde Bottomsley, a member of the board, leaned over and told Booker, "You're a good card player. We'd hate to see you leave."

There were no student transfers in or out of the district. No one was hired or fired and no one resigned. No pressing issues were raised by anyone on the board, and it was decided to just table again until a more convenient time the letter received last October from the state board of education since it was getting late and the board members were anxious to get started on their rides back home.

The next meeting was set for the same time and place next month. Board member Jack Brewmeister was again asked to bring refreshments.
