DECATUR -- The Miss Decatur Barbecue contest has always been a big draw since the first girl walked across the stage at Old City Park to accept her crown in 1953. Sixty-four girls, ages 15-19, from northwest Arkansas have worn the crown.

In recent years, participation in pageants like Miss Decatur Barbecue has declined due to lack of interest. Over the last five Miss Decatur Barbecue contests, fewer than 10 contestants entered the event. This led Decatur Chamber of Commerce members to rethink the future of the Miss Decatur Barbecue contest.

Originally, the chamber decided to cancel the event but then decided instead to host one more Miss Decatur Barbecue to retire it in style.

Of the 64 winners, less than 20 have actually been from Decatur. The remainder has been from Gentry, Gravette, Fayetteville, Springdale and other locations across northwest Arkansas. Armed with this information, the chamber decided to open the contest to Decatur girls only. If this would indeed be the final year, it is only fitting that a Decatur girl wears the last crown.

However, after much debate, chamber members voted to extend the entries to Gentry and Gravette contestants, too. Depending on the success of this year's event, chamber members may decide to continue the event next year.

Who will be the crowned the next Miss Decatur Barbecue? Come to Veterans Park in Decatur at 5 p.m. to learn the answer to that question.
