DECATUR -- Just before the start of the Dec. 17 meeting of the Decatur School Board, school superintendent Steve Watkins presented two special awards to a very special group of Decatur High School athletes and their coach.

Coach Tajhe Turner, who completed her first season as head volleyball coach, was presented with the Decatur School District's "Bulldog Pride Award" for her leadership during the Decatur Lady Bulldogs' 2018 volleyball season, which was the best season since the program began four years ago.

The volleyball team, led by seniors Desi Meek and McKinzee Swaim, finished the season in fourth place in the 2A West and with a win in the district tournament against the Mulberry Yellowjackets qualifying Decatur for the state volleyball playoffs for the very first time. The team lost in the first round to the top 2A volleyball team in the state, the St. Joseph Bulldogs, in three straight sets.

The Lady Bulldogs finished with a 13-6 overall record and an amazing 6-6 conference record.

Also present to accept the team's award were captain Desi Meek (accepting the award on behalf of the team), Kaliey Sutherland, Bronwyn Berry, Stephanie Sandoval, Natalia Rodriguez, Callie McBride, Ithzel Martinez and McKinzee Swaim.

At the conclusion of the award ceremony, Coach Turner and the Decatur Lady Bulldog volleyball team received a round of applause from the school board and all who attended the meeting.
