DECATUR -- Put away the video games, iPhones, iPads and laptop and take a trip back to a time when the only thing kids needed was a wide-open field, a little mud and a constant supply of water. This is exactly what students in the Sparks summer program did June 20 in the open field behind Northside Elementary School in Decatur.

Decatur Fire Department's pumper truck 2412 was on hand to provide a steady stream of water, keeping the students cool from the baking summer sun.

Soon, enough water was distributed over the open field to create several deep mud puddles. Once the kids discovered these pools of mud, it was game on. It did not take the kids long to discover the joys of jumping, running and sliding around in the muck. But why should the kids worry about the mess when they had the fire department's open nozzle to hose them down and make them clean again?

Other activities during the water day event included a water balloon catch and a homemade water slide, complete with plenty of super water blasters. If the water slide did not get the kids good and soaked, the water blasters did.

To be a kid again, to be able to enjoy a little fun on a hot summer afternoon is priceless! Sometimes the simplest things in life, like a mud puddle or a garden hose, can provide hours of good old-fashioned summer bliss.
