DECATUR — A full day is planned for thisyear's 56th Annual Decatur Barbecue on Friday, August 7.
Following is a schedule for the day's activities:◊7 a.m. - The Fun Run will begin at the Edmiston ball fields with 10K, 5K and 2K races for runners, ages 12 and under, 13-17, 18-29, 30-39, 40-49 and 50-plus. Registration for the races begins at 6:30 a.m.
There is a $10 registration fee, which includes a Tshirt for the runner.
◊10 a.m. - Games
with a big top circus
theme for kids 10 and
under will be held in
Veterans Park. The activities will include a frog jumping contest, and a turtle dress-up contest.
◊11 a.m. - Chickendinners will be served in Veterans Park and at the Decatur General Store until supplies run out.
◊2:30 p.m. - The Parade willbegin in the old city park and continue down Main Street. Entrants
should be in the old city park for line
up at 1:30 p.m. Prizes for the best float, best vintage vehicle and best mount willbe awarded. Motorcycle riders and tractors are welcome.
◊ 6 p.m. - Miss Decatur Barbecue Pageant casual and interview contest.
◊6:30 p.m. - Tiny Tot Contest for girls and boys, ages 4 to 6.
◊7 p.m. - Formal wear contest and crowning of Miss Decatur Barbecue.
◊7:30 p.m. - Early show with country singer Kyla Horton.
◊9 to 10:30 p.m. - Entertainment by country singer John Conlee.
◊Big Dan Hentschel of radio station US94 will be the emcee for the evening.
◊All Day - Animals from the Wild Wilderness Safari will be on display in Veterans Park, and camel rides willbe available.
There will also be pony rides offered by David Stanfill, inflatables, a rock wall, art and craft vendors, local business exhibits and a farmers market.
The first Decatur Barbecue was held in 1953 as a Peterson Farms get-together, and since then the chicken dinners, live entertainment and pageants have become part of Decatur's heritage.
