Pioneers fall to Cardinals

— Gentry’s Pioneer baseball team fell to the Farmington Cardinals on Monday afternoon.

Farmington’s Trey Spencer hit his second home run of the season while finishing with three runs batted in to lead the Cardinals to an 11-3 victory over Gentry in a nonconference game between the two 4A-1 Conference schools.

The Cardinals (5-1) had four players finish with multiple hits, totaling 10 base hits the game. They jumped out to a 6-0 lead on the strength of Spencer’s home run and three Gentry fielding errors.

The Pioneers committed seven errors overall.

John Sewell pitched for Gentry and picked up his second loss of the season. Sewell threw more than 100 pitches in the game and gave up 11runs on 10 hits game.

Gentry (2-4) was able to to score two runs in the third inning on a pair of base hits by Chris Wiand and Kolby Rankin. Wiand led the Pioneers at the plate by going 2 for 3 with a run scored.

“We just made way too many mistakes on the defensive side,” Gentry coach Marty Edmiston said. “You can’t make seven errors and expect to beat at team like Farmington.”
