GMS is ahead of the odds

— Gentry Middle School received high marks in a report from the Office for Education Policy, University of Arkansas, Beating the Odds - High Achieving Schools Serving Low-Income Communities.

According to the report, Gentry Middle School ranks No. 10 in the state for math and is tied for No. 4 in the state for literacy.

Individually, Gentry’s eighth grade was ranked No. 2 in the state for math and literacy.

The seventh grade was also tied for No. 5 in the state for literacy.

A school is classified as high-poverty if at least two-thirds (66 percent) of the students in the school were eligible for the Free or Reduced Lunch (FRL) program in the 2011-12 school year. There were 157 Arkansas middle schools classified in the high-poverty category.

Data used for the above ranking is based on student performance on the Arkansas Department of Education Benchmark and end-of-course examinations.
