Lions gain experience in non-league play

GRAVETTE -- The Lions baseball team gained some hard lessons but came away with one big win during spring break week in non-conference games against Shiloh Christian, Jay (Okla.) and McDonald County (Mo.).

Against Shiloh Christian at Springdale on Thursday, Gravette scored one run on four hits but still came up short, losing when Shiloh scored a run in the 10th to break the 1-1 tie which had been in place since the third inning when Shiloh matched Gravette's second-inning run.

The Lions picked up their only run when Jackson Soule hit a line-drive single to right and scored following an Ethan Vanderpool single.

In addition to hits by Soule and Vanderpool, Wyatt Gibbons was two for two in the game.

Vanderpool pitched nine innings and struck out seven Shiloh batters. Brandon Shaw pitched in the bottom of the 10th and was credited with the loss.

Against Jay (Okla.) on Tuesday, March 25, Aaron Means pitched six innings, allowed six hits and only one run against Jay. But Gravette's batters had a great day, picking up 10 runs on eight hits and three walks.

Wyatt Gibbons got on in the third after being hit by a pitch. He was moved around the bases by a sacrifice grounder by Means and a single to left field by Jackson Soule, to make it 1-0, Gravette.

In the fourth, the Lions blew open the game, picking up another four runs, and adding two more each in the fifth and sixth. Jay's only run came in the fifth.

All but two of Gravette's batters had hits in the game, and Means and Brandon Shaw each had two RBIs.

McDonald Co. (Mo.) 7

The Lions were only able to get three hits against McDonald County on Monday, March 24, and lost the non-league game, 7-1.

Cody Fields got two hits and Zach Nelson one. Nelson had the only RBI and run scored for Gravette when he hit a home run in the second inning.

McDonald County scored one in the second, three in the third, one in the fifth and two more in the sixth.

Wyatt Gibbons and Matthew Stelting pitched for the Lions, with Stelting credited with the loss.
