Lady Pioneers come up short

GENTRY -- The Lady Pioneers traveled to Kansas, Okla., Monday but couldn't bring home the victory. The girls lost to Kansas, 68 to 36.

Gentry took the lead early when Mallory Morris dropped in a three pointer. When Kansas responded with a long shot of its own, Morris added another two points and Rachel Lawrence hit for three to give the Lady Pioneers a healthy lead. But by the end of the quarter, Kansas was back on top with a good number of points made at the free-throw line and Gentry never regained the lead.

Lawrence led the Lady Pioneers with 15 points. Morris had seven. Lawrence also led her teammates in rebounds, with 7. Morris had two.

The Lady Pioneers of Gentry fell to Johnson County Westside in play Dec. 3 at the Van Buren Tournament, 57-38.

The Gentry girls were down by 10 when Mallory Morris put the Lady Pioneers on the board with a two pointer, but Gentry never recovered from its early deficit. With continual Gentry turnovers, Westside held and built on its lead throughout the tournament game.

High points in the game include Morris' four 3-pointers and her game high 15 points. Rachel Lawrence picked up 12 for the Lady Pioneers. Lauren Little led the Gentry girls in rebounds with seven. Lawrence had five.

Gentry finished the game with 33 rebounds, three blocks and a steal.

In the opening game for Gentry's Lady Pioneers in the Van Buren tournament, Morrilton held Gentry scoreless through the first quarter and put 16 points on the board. Rachel Lawrence finally put Gentry on the board early in the second quarter with a pair of deuces. And with shots by Mallory Morris, Bailey Bills and Brieann Ward, Gentry was on the rebound. But Morrilton outplayed them in the second half and held them to three points in the final quarter to build upon their lead and take the game, 53-26.

Lawrence and Morris each had 6 points in the game. Haley Borgeteien-James had 4, Lauren Little and Bailey Bills 3, and Brieann Ward and Amanda Brenes, 2. Lawrence led the Lady Pioneers in rebounds with 7. Little had 6.
