DECATUR -- Crystal Lake was a busy place Dec. 26 as eagle watchers and boaters took advantage of a rare sunny winter morning while clouds and the threat of rain loomed on the horizon.

Kelly Mitchell launched his kayak from the shore of the lake for a short jaunt around the lake.

"I didn't realize how high the lake was," Mitchell said. "I paddled around the perimeter all the way to the (Arkansas Highway) 102 bridge."

With the recent rains and the threat of more on the way, the water level at Crystal Lake are within two inches of the top of the spillway at the overflow pond.

Shawn and Kristy Chase from Gentry put their flat-bottom boat in at the ramp and headed out for a little fishing. They quickly returned when they realized the wind was picking up, causing a few white caps to form.

As for the eagle watching area, Mitchell got his money's worth as at least five bald eagles and two juveniles flew along the ridge line on the northeast side of the lake. The eagles have definitely landed and taken up residency at the lake.

A word of caution when boating on Crystal Lake. The water temperature is hovering between 35 and 45 degrees and any prolonged exposure can cause hypothermia. Dress appropriately when on or near the lake and always let someone know your plans before heading to any lake or river.
