Library tells of activities

GRAVETTE -- Here it is 2014 and your library is continually trying to improve its programs and provide you good reading materials that you're interested in! We provide programming and special events to keep you connected to your town. Libraries provide more than just books. To promote libraries, we are having a "Declaration for the Right to Libraries" month for February. Libraries are essential to a democratic society! Every day, in countless communities across our nation and the world, millions of children, students and adults use libraries to learn, grow and achieve their dreams.

In addition to a vast array of books, computers and other resources, library users benefit from the expert teaching and guidance of librarians and library staff to help expand their minds and open new worlds. We declare and affirm our right to quality libraries -- public school, academic and special -- and urge you to show your support by signing our "Declaration for the Right to Libraries" document here at Gravette Public Library.

This is our kick off in why libraries -- your library -- is so important to have around. Your library is growing and we are raising money to build a new facility. For that to happen, we need you to continue to be a part of this library and its programs. Here are a few I am highlighting this month:

1) GED -- Started January 13 and goes to May 16. Mostly will be done online now with a tutor who will help you here at the library. Mondays and Wednesdays from 4 to 6 p.m. This is sponsored by the Northwest Arkansas Community College and only made possible by a grant they get from the state. This is a legitimate program that helps you receive your diploma.

2) E-BOOKS -- Another addition is you can download digitized books to your computer, tablet, laptop and smart phone. Each book is considered one of your checkouts. You can see us here at the library to learn more about it. Most children know about this because they use it now in school. We adults need to catch up!

3) TUESDAY READING: BOOKS & BUBBLES -- We moved it to 10:30 - 11 every Tuesday. Our goal is to create a fun learning experience to help your pre-kindergarten child prepare for their lifetime of learning.

4) RENAISSANCE FESTIVAL 2014 -- Planned for April 19 from the hours of 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. A FREE FAMILY EVENT. Come rain or shine, we will hold this at the Old Town Park here in Gravette. This will be our fourth year in presenting this fun event!

5) PICTURE MONTAGE -- Our newest program we want to tell you about. Preserve your family memories! We can do up to 50 photos and put them on a DVD for family history. Great for a variety of events: Weddings, birthdays, graduations, family vacation, anniversaries or school projects. This is not a free service. The materials are ordered and, because of the man hours involved to process this, we have to pass the cost on to you. The charge will be based on your individual project.
