Band student places first chair in competition

DECATUR -- Ger Vang qualified to be in the 2014 Arkansas North Region Orchestra and the 2014 All-Region Jazz Band. He placed first- chair flute in the orchestra and second-chair alto sax in the jazz band.

Three students from Decatur competed against students from all of the schools in the region, including the "Big 4" and several river valley schools, Nov. 3 at the orchestra auditions held at Farmington High School. The auditions are extremely competitive because only two of each instrument make the orchestra.

Two students from Decatur competed against other students from the region (including Bentonville and Rogers) Tuesday night at the all-region jazz band auditions held at Green Forest High School.

As a result of Vang's great achievement, he will be participating in the North Region orchestra clinic which begins Nov. 14 at Rogers High School. He will perform in a concert on Saturday, Nov. 15, at 2 p.m.

He also participated in the jazz band clinic held at Washington Junior High in Bentonville on Saturday, Nov. 8. This was an all day clinic followed by an afternoon concert. The guest clinician was James Pianalto from Benton Junior High.

Due to his chair placement in the jazz band, Vang has qualified to audition for the Arkansas All State Jazz Band on alto saxophone. Those auditions will be Feb. 6 on the University of Central Arkansas campus in Conway.
