Lady Pioneers can't catch up to Lady Elks, Gentry boys win

GENTRY -- The Lady Pioneers tried to close the gap but lost to the Lady Elks of Elkins in a Nov. 18 contest at Gentry, 42-33.

The Lady Pioneers struck first when Haley Borgeteien-James put in a two pointer early in the game, but the Lady Elks answered with a three-pointer and never relinquished the lead after that, even though the Gentry girls pulled within 5 points after Mallory Morris made a two-pointer in the fourth quarter.

Gentry was down 24-12 at the half and played a much stronger second half, outscoring Elkins 21-18, but it wsn't enough.

The Lady Pioneers might have caught up, but time ran short and the Lady Elks ran down the clock, drawing fouls and rebuilding their lead at the free-throw line.

Mallory Morris scored 16 points in the game. Borgeteien-James had 12 points. Brieann Ward put in five.

The Lady Pioneers fell to Rogers Heritage at Rogers on Nov. 11.

Rachel Lawrence scored 20 points for Gentry, with five of the baskets shot behind the three-point line. Mallory Morris had 7 and Haley Borgeteien-James 6 in the non-conference game.

The Pioneers placed four players in double figures to defeat Elkins in the season opener on Nov. 18.

Brent Parker scored a team-high 19 points, while Wyatt Clark added 14, Blake Boyd 11 and Mark White 10 for Gentry. Trevor England led Elkins with a game-high 22.
