Gentry fares well in home track meet

GENTRY -- The Gentry Pioneers took second in men's and fourth in women's events at the Pioneer Relays held in Gentry on April 16. Decatur finished sixth in men's and ninth in women's. Gravette finished ninth and seventh in the track and field events.

A highlight for Gentry was the new school record set by Cole Cripps, Gentry sophomore, in the pole vault. Not only did he take first in the event, Cripps broke his own record and the school record when he cleared 13 feet, 5 inches. Cripps also held the previous school record at 13 feet, 3 inches.

Ryan Shaffer, a sophomore from Decatur, brought home the gold in the 300-meter hurdles with his time of 43.96.

Bryan Harris, a Gentry junior, and Cripps took the first and second-place slots in the boys' high jump, with Harris clearing 5 feet, six inches, and Cripps, 5 feet, 4 inches. Harris also took second in the pole vault, behind Cripps, with his vault of 12 feet, 6 inches. Harris captured first in the long jump, clearing 19 feet, 8 inches, and first in the triple jump at 39 feet, 9 inches.

Zach Ellis, Gentry senior, again captured first place in both the shot put and discus throws. He cleared 40 feet, 1 inch, with the shot and threw the discus 126 feet, 2 inches.

On the girls' side, Destiny Laymon, Gravette junior, took second in the 400-meter dash. She was followed by Mallory Morris of Gentry, who also took first in the 800-meter run, another second in the 3200-meter run and a third in the long jump.

Cameron Shaffer, a Decatur sophomore, threw the shot 28 feet, 2 inches, and the discus 74 feet, 2 inches, to capture the gold in those two women's events. Jessica Hernandez, a Gentry senior, took second in the discus with her throw of 66 feet, 5 inches.
