DECATUR -- The Decatur junior and senior track team traveled to Oklahoma to participate in the Vinita Invitational Track Meet April 4. For the junior high boys' team, it was a day they will not soon forget.
So far this season, the junior high teams are doing better than the senior high teams. There are more kids involved with the junior high teams this year then in seasons past.
"We actually have more athletes on the junior high team this season then we do on the senior high team," said Shane Holland, Decatur track coach. "My junior high boys are among some of the best athletes I have had on that team."
While the senior high teams (finishing 13 overall) and junior high girls (finishing 7 overall) did well at the Vinita meet, it was the junior high boys who stole the show for Decatur. They placed first in the meet with 94 points, 17 points ahead of the second-place finisher, Cleveland, Okla.
The next two years will begin a building program for the senior high teams. The lessons learned by the younger athletes this season hopefully will translate into a run for the state championship for Holland and the Decatur track program.
