Schools to host open house

— With the end of summer rapidly approaching, it is time for kids to put down their game controllers and smart phones and grab the books, laptops and calculators and become students, time to head back to the classroom for a new school year.

The Decatur School District, like many around Northwest Arkansas, is gearing up for the first day of the 2015-16 school year, which is scheduled to begin Aug. 17. Teachers and administrators are already preparing classrooms and offices to receive the onslaught of students.

Decatur schools will kick off the new school year with an open house at Decatur High, Decatur Middle and Northside Elementary Schools Thursday, Aug. 13, from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m.

"The open house is a way for the parents and students to take a tour of campus, meet teachers, ask questions and get a good general sense of what our school is like," said John Unger, Decatur Middle School dean of students. "It is also a way for our teachers and staff to get to know the students and parents and put a face with the names."

The open house will give those high school and middle school students who were unable to attend the preregistration week in July a chance to pick up their packets, which will include a class schedule and locker assignments.

At Northside Elementary School, an additional pre-K classroom was added to meet the growing needs of Decatur area residents. Currently, the school has openings for additional students. The pre-K class is open to children, ages 3 and 4. To enroll a child in this pre-K class, visit Northside Elementary School's office to fill out an enrollment form.

The buses will be on the roads early in the Decatur area on Monday. School officials remind motorists to observe all school bus safety laws. Stop when school bus lights are blinking and safety signs are deployed. Watch for kids crossing the streets or walking near school zones.
