About town...

Christmas lights are hung on our major streets, along with City Hall, the depot, the train, and on many buildings on Main Street. Hanging Christmas decorations marks the 2015 Christmas season in Decatur. We added decorations to our living Christmas tree at the depot this year, so please go by and visit this historic area.

Our annual Christmas parade, which is sponsored by the Decatur Chamber of Commerce, will be this Saturday evening at 6 p.m. on Main Street.

During this time of year, please pause a little more often, showing respect and kindness to your neighbors and family. It is during this season we make a difference to those who mean the most to us.

We all are blessed to call Decatur home, and what a great place to live and work!

You may be an elected official, city employee, volunteer fireman or a member of a committee which supports our city council in making important decisions for our city. I want to say thank you. You are so appreciated and valued by your city.

Volunteer membership on our Planning and Zoning Committee, Parks Committee, Library Committee, Economic Development Committee, Cemetery Committee, Decatur Historical Committee and Friends of Decatur Commission is your opportunity to connect with our city. Total membership to these committees is nearly 60. Thank you all for volunteering your time. These committees offer a direct line of communication to your city council. A city council member is assigned to each committee.

If you are interested in becoming a member to any of these committees or becoming a member of a veterans committee in 2016, please contact City Hall and the office staff will communicate your wishes to me. I want to provide leadership between our local VFW and interested citizens to build a strong veterans' presence in Decatur.

It is my pleasure to serve you as mayor of Decatur. Working together, Decatur can do awesome things!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Bob Tharp,

Decatur mayor
