Decatur girls lose in opening round

HACKETT -- The Decatur Bulldog senior girls traveled to Hackett Feb. 19 to participate in the 2A 4West district tournament against the Union Christian Lady Eagles for what would be their final game of the season.

The first quarter began slowly with the Lady Eagles scoring the first points of the game. Decatur answered with a two pointer at about the six minute mark in the quarter. Both teams played a tough defense, allowing very little scoring. The quarter ended with a 5 to 4 Lady Bulldog lead.

The Lady Eagles jumped out in front during the opening minutes of the second quarter. But the Lady Bulldogs tied the game at 11 at the 4:02 mark. Union Christian had a 5 to 2 run on Decatur before the half ended, giving them a 16 to 13 lead over the Lady Bulldogs.

The Lady Bulldogs played one of their best first halves of the season, staying within three points of the Lady Eagles. The air around the Decatur players was more relaxed, giving the girls a chance to enjoy their last game together as a team. But, like so many of their past games, they ran out of steam halfway through the third quarter. And, by the end, trailed Union Christian by 20 points, 37 to 17.

Union Christian maintained that 20-point lead throughout the rest of the game, ending Decatur's season and handing the girls a 45 to 25 loss.

"I am proud of the way the kids played tonight," said Bill Niven, girls basketball coach. "The same problem that plagued us all season long was the lack of players. We brought six players to the tournament and they played their best. I am proud of every one of them."

The Lady Bulldogs ended the 2014-15 season with a 1 and 20 record.
