'The LORD giveth wisdom....'

"For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding." Proverbs 2:6

God gave to Solomon wisdom from His Word, making him known all over the world for his great understanding (1 Kings 3:4-15). We see Jesus' wisdom and understanding of the Scriptures at the age of 12 as He sat among the Jewish teachers listening and asking questions (Luke 2:40-52). And we too were made wise unto salvation through the hearing of God's Word (Eph. 1:3-14; cf. 2 Tim. 3:15).

And, if we desire to grow in wisdom and understanding, God is the source and His Spirit is our teacher (1 John 2:27). Thus, we pray for wisdom and understanding (James 1:5) and read and study God's Word; "for the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding" (Prov. 2:6; cf. 2:1ff.).

Though the world would have us believe the Bible is foolishness, it actually reveals the wisdom of the Almighty God who created all things and who sent His Son to redeem us. It explains how life began, how we became sinful and inclined to evil and how God provided a remedy for our sin by sending His only begotten Son to die in our stead, rise again and win our eternal salvation (cf. 1 Cor. 1:18ff.). The Scriptures reveal to us our utter sinfulness, Christ Jesus as our Savior, and how God would have us live as His redeemed children (cf. Rom. 3:10-26; 2 Tim. 3:14-17).

God desires us to grow in our knowledge and understanding of Him and His plan for our salvation. Therefore, we read and study the Scriptures to learn of Christ Jesus and all He does for us. And, treasuring the wisdom of God revealed to us, we join with the psalmist in saying: "O how love I thy law! it is my meditation all the day..." (Psalm 119:97).

We read and meditate in God's Word, "For with thee is the fountain of life: in thy light shall we see light" (Psalm 36:9).

Make us wise, O LORD, in the true wisdom revealed in Your Word. And, above all, make us wise unto salvation through faith in the Son that we might have pardon, forgiveness and everlasting life for the sake of His innocent sufferings and death for us upon the cross. Amen.
