Sulphur Springs celebration set for Saturday

SULPHUR SPRINGS -- The annual Sulphur Springs Independence Day celebration will be held this Saturday, June 27, with all activities taking place in the city park. A full day of events has been planned and there will be fun for all ages.

The day begins with a pancake breakfast at the Shiloh cafeteria. Serving will continue until the food is gone. Food vendors will be set up in the park and a variety of food will be available. Sale of hot dogs will benefit the Sulphur Springs fire department. Barbecue chicken dinners will be served, with the chickens donated by Simmons. Another booth will feature funnel cakes, pretzels and other traditional fair food.

A library booth will be set up in the park, with book signings by two local authors, including J.S. Carroll, who has written "Sarren" and "Sarren, Beyond Saurus," the first two volumes in a planned trilogy.

A fishing derby will begin at 9 a.m. in Lake LaBalladine. The fishing derby is sponsored by the fire department, which will award trophies in three divisions, ages 5 and under, 6 to 9 years and 10 to 15 years. Arkansas Game and Fish Commission will stock the lake with 250 or more channel catfish.

Fire department and police vehicles from throughout the area will be on display for the youngsters' enjoyment, and a couple of helicopters are expected to visit.

Registration for the car show will begin at 10 a.m. and continue until noon. Entrants must pay a registration fee of $10 per vehicle. If three or more vehicles are entered by the same owner, the third vehicle and more will be half price. Judging will begin at 1 p.m., with awards immediately following. After the car show, a cruise and burnouts will be held with two trophies given for best burnout and burnout epic fail. The main burnout will be on Hibler Street between Patterson and Highway 59. No burnouts will be allowed on the newly paved streets in town. For information about the car show, call Scott Weber at 479-599-8383.

A car bash will be held at 10 a.m. Horseshoes, car painting and a dunk tank will be available throughout the day. Youngsters will also be able to enjoy a large water slide, and a rock wall will be set up for climbing.

A rubber duck race is scheduled, beginning at the Patterson Street bridge and continuing down to the lake, with three prizes given. Top prize will be $100. Youngsters 17 and younger will also have an opportunity to earn $100 by searching the "money car." For a payment of $2, they will be allowed to hunt for five minutes for a $100 bill hidden in the vehicle, donated by Got Junk?

Musical entertainment will include a performance by Smoked Honey, which will set up in the gazebo and play between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. A street dance will be held in the evening, with a fireworks display after dark.
