DECATUR -- The city of Decatur hosted the first of what is expected to be many town-hall meetings in the community room at city hall on March 19.

Fifteen area residents and civic leaders attended this inaugural event which was organized by Mayor Bob Tharp.

"I wanted to hear from the citizens of Decatur, and I feel the best way to accomplish this task was through a town meeting," Tharp said. "This way I can talk face-to-face with Decatur residents about issues that concern them."

During the hour-long event, attendees had the opportunity to volunteer for several committees which were designed to bring residents and city officials together in an effort to make Decatur a more desirable place to live.

These committees include parks and recreation, planning and zoning, library, cemetery, economic development and a historical society. The newest of these committees, the Decatur Historical Society, was organized by Tharp to aid in the preservation of local history and several key historical sites throughout the community.

While the turnout for this event was light, Tharp believes that by getting citizens involved in the affairs of their community, a more vibrant and prosperous town will emerge.

"Eventually, I hope to hold more town meetings in the future," Tharp said. "It is very important to me to know what the citizens of Decatur expect from their city government."
