GRAVETTE -- The Gravette Post Office and its mail carriers participated again this year in the U.S. Postal Service's Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive with very successful results.

Gravette postal carriers and office staff collected 2,342 pounds of food, a new record for the local office. All food collected by the local carriers will be donated to the Harvest Baptist Church food pantry in Gravette and the First Baptist Church food pantry in Sulphur Springs.

The Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive, sponsored by the U.S. Postal Service and the National Association of Letter Carriers, has collected one billion pounds of food over the last 22 years the program has been in existence.

Postal patrons were asked to place bags of nonperishable foods beside their mailboxes on Saturday, May 9, for the annual Letter Carrier's Food Drive, the largest one-day food drive in the nation. Bins were also placed in the lobby of the Gravette Post Office where patrons could drop off food all week. Area customers were very generous and 12 large bins of food were collected.

Postal clerk Lorrie Amos expressed thanks to the following area businesses and individuals who contributed food for the drive: Arvest Bank, Austin Drug, Bank of Gravett, Dollar General, Green Heart Realty, Harris Auto, Healthbuilders Chiropractic Clinic, Jackie Lambert, Kent Leonard D.D.S., Maysville Handi Stop, McKee Foods, Roberts-Philpott Eye Clinic, Charlotte Robinson, Shelter Insurance, SportsWired, The Station, Teasley Drug and Walmart.
