GENTRY -- Gentry's Mark White switched sports from motocross to golf when he was 10 years old and he's never looked back.

The four-time all-state selection took another step in his golf career as he signed a national letter of intent to play at Arkansas-Fort Smith in a ceremony Nov. 11 at Gentry High School.

White also had offers from Lyon College and Winona State (Minn.). He acknowledged the facilities in Minnesota were top-notch, but said UAFS' proximity to home was a key factor in his choice.

"Fort Smith has a new coach and great facilities, too," White said. "I love how it's only an hour and a half from my home."

White finished in the top 10 in the Class 4A state tournament each of the past four years. He was seventh this year, after being fifth as a junior and third as a sophomore.

Gentry golf coach Tim Fulks said White's work ethic will serve him well going forward.

"Mark is always at the golf course," Fulks said. "He's got a great attitude, always open to suggestions. But his work ethic is just outstanding."
