Gentry Intermediate School students to get healthy snack

GENTRY -- Gentry Intermediate School was chosen through a discretionary grant process to receive funding for the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program for the 2016-2017 school year from the Arkansas Department of Education's Child Nutrition Unit and the USDA by way of Section 19 of the Richard B. Russell National School Lunch Act.

The purpose of the program is to increase elementary school children's consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables by exposing them to a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, and to develop healthy eating habits in the process, a school press release stated. This will permit the students to receive a healthy snack in the late afternoon when they are especially hungry before they leave for the day, according to the release.

Parents who have a student at Gentry Intermediate School are encouraged to ask him or her about the snack for the day. Parents may find students like a particular fruit or vegetable they've never tried before, according to the school district release.
