Registration set for Decatur Schools

DECATUR --With less than one month left until the 2016-17 school year begins, it is time for students and parents to register for classes.

This year's enrollment will be a little different for some students of Decatur Middle School, with the addition of the fifth grade classes. With Northside Elementary operating at capacity last year, the school board decided to move the fifth graders to the middle school in order to stay in compliance with state regulations on class size.

Since Decatur Middle School operated around 50 percent capacity last year, there was plenty of room to expand without adding additional classroom space to the elementary school.

Registration for students in grades 5-12 begins Aug. 1, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., in the high school commons area next to the main office. Registration is expected to take about 20 minutes.

A parent or guardian needs to accompany the students if possible. Parents with students in both Decatur Middle and High Schools can enroll them at the same time.

The purpose of early enrollment is to have a set schedule in hand before school starts and to resolve any schedule conflicts without loss of class time. It also allows the schools to collect emergency contact numbers to put into the system before school starts.

Besides the schedules, students will receive their locker assignments, fill out enrollment papers and get familiar with both campuses.
