Barbecue grill catches home on fire

GRAVETTE -- Gravette Fire Department responded just after 5 p.m. on Sunday to a home at 606 Dallas Street, S.W. The firemen were toned out as a result of a grilling incident, according to fire captain David Orr.

The home's residents were cooking on a barbecue grill when their carport caught on fire. The carport was attached to the house and the fire melted most of the vinyl siding on the west side of the home. A couple of the studs on the home itself were scorched, Orr said, but fire crews were able to extinguish the fire before further damage was done to the house.

Fire crews from Maysville, Sulphur Springs and Decatur were also called out to assist at the fire.

"Because of the weather we did a full tone out," Orr explained. "When it's so hot, it's hard on the firemen to fight a fire. You play out in a hurry, so we decided to call for help."

Firemen remained on the scene for a couple of hours to check the damage and make sure the fire would not reignite, Orr said.
