Decatur graduates receive scholarships during awards program

DECATUR -- It was a night of celebration as graduating seniors of Decatur High School received recognition for their hard work and dedication to the completion of their high school education during the 2015-16 school year. Students received scholarships and other awards during the 2016 Decatur High School Academic Awards and Scholarships program May 9 at Peterson Gym in Decatur. A total of $333,000 was given to several members of the 2016 senior class.

Haley Burden was presented with several scholarships, including the Decatur Alumni Association, Chamber of Commerce, Arkansas Scholar, as well as a full scholarship from Arkansas Tech University in Russellville. Burden is the 2016 class president and valedictorian. She also received her honor-graduate cord.

Tyler Riddle, Class of 2016 salutatorian, earned a $5,200 scholarship from Missouri Southern State University. He also received scholarships from the Decatur Chamber of Commerce and Athletic Booster Club. He also received his honor-graduate cord.

Kyle Shaffer was given a full scholarship to a school of his choice by the United States Marine Corps. Shaffer will ship off to boot camp in June for a rigorous 13 weeks of training.

Troy Flood, Burden and Riddle each received their National Honor Society stoles.

Other seniors receiving scholarships and awards during the ceremony included Celine Prelle, Cindy Guadamarra, Skyler Spence, Shastadee Vann and Lizeth Fuentes.
